“The Clever Monkey”

Once upon a time, there was a clever monkey. He lived on a
beautiful island, in an apple tree. One day, a crocodile swam
to the island. ‘I’m hungry,’ he said.
So the monkey threw a red apple to the crocodile. The
crocodile munched and munched. The next day, the
crocodile came back. ‘Please, may I have two apples?’ he asked. He ate one and gave
one to his wife.
The crocodile went to see the monkey every day, to listen to his tales and eat his
apples. He wanted to be clever, just like the monkey. The crocodile’s wife had an idea.
‘Why don’t you eat his heart? Then you’ll be clever, just like him!’
The next day, he said to the monkey, ‘Come to my house! We’ll have lunch together, to
thank you for the apples.’
But when he arrived, the crocodile snapped and said, ‘Monkey! I want to eat your heart,
so I can be as clever as you!’
The clever monkey thought quickly and said, ‘But… I haven’t got my heart here. It’s on
the island, in the apple tree.’
They all went back to the island. ‘Wait here, and I will get my heart,’ said the monkey.
The monkey quickly climbed the tree and sat at the top. ‘Oh, Crocodile. You are
greedy. Of course you can’t have my heart. And now, you can’t have my apples!’ And
the clever monkey laughed and laughed!

The Liar

The Liar
By Hovhannes Tumanyan
Once upon a time there was a king. This king declares all over his country: “Anyone who tells such a lie that I say it is a lie, I will give them half of my kingdom.”
There comes a shepherd and says: “Your majesty, my father had a cane and he could reach the stars in the sky with it.”
“There may be such a thing”, answers the king, “My grandfather had a pipe so long that he put one end in his mouth and lit it with the sun.”
The liar goes out puzzled.
There comes a tailor and says: “I am sorry for being late, my king, I was to come earlier. It rained a lot yesterday, lightning struck, the sky was ripped up, I had to go and mend it.”
“Well, good of you”, says the king, “But you didn’t mend it well. It rained a little this morning.”
This one goes out too.
There comes in a poor peasant with a pan under his arm.
“What do you want, man?”, asks the king.
“You owe me a pan full of gold, I have come for it”
“A pan full of gold?”, the king gets surprised, “You are telling a lie. I don’t owe you any gold.”
“If I am telling a lie, then give me half of your kingdom”
“No, no, you are telling the truth”, the king changes his word.
“If I am telling the truth, give me a pan full of gold”

Black Kiddy

In a deep forest there lives a goat. She has a lovely black kiddy. Every day she leaves the kiddy at home and goes to the field to graze. In the evening she comes home, knocks at the door and calls:

Black kiddy,

Lovely sonny,

I have walked over the hill and dale,

I have made sweet milk for you,

Open the door let me in,

And I will give(կտամ քեզ) you sweet, sweet milk,

Black kiddy,

Lovely sonny!

The kiddy jumps to his feet and opens the door. Mother goat gives him milk and goes to the field to graze again.

The wolf sees all this and one evening he comes up, knocks at the door and calls in his harsh voice:

Black kiddy,

Lovely sonny,

I have walked over the hill and dale,

I have made sweet milk for you,

Open the door let me in,

And I will give you sweet, sweet milk,

Black kiddy,

Lovely sonny!

The kiddy listens and listens and then asks:

”Who are you? I don’t know you. My mother doesn’t call that way. She has a sweet, soft voice. Go away…..Don’t come here any more”

The wolf goes away.

Soon mother goat comes, knocks at the door and calls:

Black kiddy,

Lovely sonny,

I have walked over the hill and dale,

I have made sweet milk for you,

Open the door let me in,

And I will give you sweet, sweet milk,

Black kiddy,

Lovely sonny!

The kiddy opens the door, drinks his milk and tells his mother about the wolf.

“Ba, ba, ba, ba dear Blacky….Well done! It is good that you didn’t open(չբացեցիր) the door. It was the wolf(գայլն էր). If he comes again(Եթե նա կրկին գա), shout at him, “If you don’t go away my mother will kill you(քեզ կսպանի) with her sharp horns”.
